Eaglescliffe is a small town just north of the river Tees, in the borough of Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham in north east England on the A135 Yarm Road, formerly the old A19. It adjoins a small village called Egglescliffe, which is thought to have been the original name of the town. According to local folklore, this was the name until a mistake was made on a sign at the railway station and afterwards it became known as Eaglescliffe. The Stockton and Darlington Railway passed through the grounds of Preston Hall in Eaglescliffe, which saw a famous race between a stagecoach traveling along the Yarm Road and Locomotive No 1, on the opening day of the railway. Many events are held at Preston Park to the north of the town, every year, mostly run by Stockton Council. The Yarm Road area of the town has a prevalence of large houses with gardens, which local residents are trying to preserve from being bought by developers and turned into flats, with a series of protests held at regular intervals along Yarm Road. Whenever a new development plan is announced or planning application made, it is always contested by the group known as EPAG – the Eaglescliffe Preservation Action Group.
