A former village, Ormesby is situated six miles west of Guisborough, overlooking the course of the river Tees amd the southern part of county Durham in north east England. Now an urbansed suburb of Middlesbrough, it remains within the county of North Yorkshire, some of it falling in the borough of Cleveland and Redcar. The original Ormesby village was formed in 1023 and was the original owner of Ormesby Hall. Ormesby Hall, a modern mansion, built by Mrs Pennyman, daughter of archbishop Wake, is situated on an eminence, at a little distance from the village, towards the south, “commanding a pleasing prospect of the mouth of the Tees, and the Sea”. Ormesby Hall is now owned by the National Trust and forms part of a conservation area, the centerpiece of which is the original 18th century Sundial Row, which is a terrace of ex-almshouses, and stables that are now privately owned. The church, dedicated to St. Cuthbert, is a small, and very ancient structure standing near the mansion. The Pennyman family it is said came from Saxony, before the conquest, and first settled in Kent. Sir William Pennyman of Marsk, was the first baronet, created by Charles I but it was James Pennyman, who disposed of the estate in 1720. Fift years later, it was purchased by Sir James Pennyman, Bart.
