Slapewath is a tiny hamlet, near Guisborough in North Yorkshire in northern England, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, the setting for the television series ‘Heartbeat’. The Cleveland Way runs right through Slapewath, as it wends its way to the North Sea coastline. In Old English, the name Slapewath means ‘slippery crossing’. The small hamlet was the site of a former railway station on the Guisborough to Saltburn line, until it was closed in the 1950’s. Close to Durham Tees Valley airport, Whitby and Guisborough, Slapewath is a favourite place to stay for those wanting to explore the North York moors and local hostelries include the Fox and Hounds, a late Victorian building and former traditional coaching house. Local tours can be taken by car or steam train, walking or cycling and the dramatic coastline is never far away with towns such as Whitby offering their own historic attraction. From the middle of the 1800’s, within a five mile radius of Slapewath were forty collieries, pits and ironstone mines. The first opened in 1865 whilst the last was closed in the 1964. Today, the area surrounding Slapewath is full of dismantled railways and former mine shafts, evidence of its industrial past whilst conversely, spa waters feature in the area between Guisborough and Boosbeck.
