The small town of Yarm in North Yorkshire provides a lovely demonstration of how some new ideas take, and some don’t. As all right thinking people should know, the modern world began in Yarm, as it was in a pub here – The George and Dragon in the High Street – that the decision was made on February 12 1821 to request Parliamentary permission to build the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which was the first in the world. Also in the town stands the stone bridge built in 1270, whereas the metal one constructed in 1805 to replace it only lasted a year. The River Tees flows to the north of the town, indeed it once provided the place with its raison d’etre, as Yarm was a river port of some size, handling goods brought up the river from the distant North Sea past Stockton and Middlesbrough. The River Leven, a tributary of the Tees, lies to the east of Yarm, and though the first mention of the town was in the Domesday Book it is likely that the settlement is far more ancient, given its geographical advantages - some believe the name is of Norse origin. The High Street is very scenic, pantile roofs and Georgian frontages blending with cobbled areas and some pleasant shops to make an interesting and comfortable scene that is much admired. Rather more dramatic and industrial is the Yarm railway viaduct, all 43 arches and 760 yards of it, a product of the Victorian age when British engineering was at its most confident. As well as offering a quiet place to stay, these days Yarm is the gateway to a wider world, with Teeside Airport a ten minute drive west along the A67.
