Though the West Yorkshire village of Hartshead Moor is an old settlement, its name these days is far more likely to bring to mind something very modern – Hartshead Moor Service Station which sits nearby on the M62 motorway. Not only does the service area provide much employment for locals, it also intruded into the life of the village in a very notable way when in 1970 the village cricket team had to give up its pavilion to motorway construction. The cricket club is a vital part of the village, with a proud record dating back to at least 1876, with the rare distinction of keeping the same name throughout its history. Older readers hearing Hartshead Moor may recall a more tragic link – in 1974 an IRA bomb attack on a coach ferrying army personnel, and their families, saw 19 die near Hartshead services. The village is well located for business people and tourists alike with places to visit in Bradford, Huddersfield and Leeds. The attractions of Haworth and Bronte country are just a few miles to the north of Hartshead, and Holmfirth of Last of the Summer Wine fame is an easy drive south from there too.
