Otley sits in West Yorkshire, administered from the booming city of Leeds, but it has as much in common with rural North Yorkshire just a very short distance away. It is then a town that has the best of both worlds, with the urban advantages of Leeds and Bradford less than ten miles away – and Leeds-Bradford Airport at Yeadon a mere three miles distant – and beautiful countryside surrounding it, the Yorkshire Dales being right on the town’s doorstep. There has been a settlement in Otley since at least Celtic times. The ridge dominating the town is called the Chevin, actually believed to be derived from the Celtic words for below the ridge, where their village was located. Roman finds show that that people made a mark locally too, but Otley came into its own in Saxon times. The first church known to have been built there dates from Saxon times, and the current All Saints’ Church houses parts of two Anglo-Saxon crosses. Although the market charter for Otley was granted in 1222 it is thought that markets in the town predate that by some considerable time. This is cattle country, and there are still regular cattle markets held in Otley, as well as the general market three times a week (Tuesday, Friday and Saturday), and these days farmers’ markets on the last Sunday of the month. The town is full of charm, honey coloured stone buildings either side of the River Wharfe winding through the place, and the Chevin looming impressively on the south side. It was the crossing point of the Wharfe at Otley that allowed the development of the town in ancient times. Otley has a place in printing history – the Wharfedale printing machine was designed there – and in the history of the arts in England: Thomas Chippendale was born in the town, and some of his greatest work can be seen in Harewood House just ten minutes’ drive away; J.M.W. Turner was a regular visitor, and painted many times in the district. There are many reasons to visit the town, with many festivals fairs and carnivals including the famous Otley Folk Festival in September, the one day Agricultural Show in May, and the Victorian Fayre before Christmas. And the hospitality is good and plentiful – there are 22 pubs in and around Otley, and a great brewing tradition in the area means beer standards are high.
