Between Buxton and Sheffield in Derbyshire lies the gritstone hill village of Hathersage, an extremely popular tourist location for many varied reasons. 5 mills once belched smoke over the surrounding countryside, the area being famous for the manufacturing of needles, buttons and pins among other things. Legend has it that Robin Hood’s comrade, Little John, hailed from Hathersage and it is believed that his final resting place was in a 10 foot long grave in the churchyard of St. Michael’s. In 1845, Charlotte Bronte stayed with a friend in the vicarage of St Michael’s church, and it is in Hathersage she reportedly found the inspiration for the village of Morton in Jane Eyre. It is no coincidence that a prominent Hathersage family for centuries happened to be the Eyres. Thornfield Hall was said to be based on Robert Eyre’s home at North Lees Hall which still stands today. Overlooking the village is Stanage Edge, popular with rock climbers of all abilities as it offers many grades of climbing difficulty. Weather permitting, swimmers can cool off in Hathersage’s outdoor pool. A thriving community with public amenities usually associated with larger towns, it still retains the peaceful tranquillity of the Peak District.
