Stannington is both a village and the name given to a larger area of Sheffield, comprising with nearby Loxley, Worrall, Bradfield and Dungworth one of that city’s electoral wards with a population approaching 17,000. The village is known locally for its brass band which has enjoyed national success. The village of Stannington is a short drive west from the centre of Sheffield, one of England’s most dynamic cities with its cultural quarter and brilliant retail facilities. It is also on the very edge of the Peak District National Park, the A57 leading from the district to Ladybower Reservoir with its boating and fishing and on through beautiful countryside to Glossop. Just a few miles off the A57 are the pretty village of Edale and the various caverns nearby. Stannington is a good base for touring some of the area’s many attractions: Kelham Island Museum, a celebration of Sheffield’s industrial glories in a living museum, is near; Chatsworth for history at one end of the social scale, and the plague village of Eyam at the other are both within a dozen miles; and the spectacular Magna Science Adventure site is closer still. The area has associations with Robin Hood (sometimes called Robin of Loxley), and in Little Matlock there is an 18th century inn named after the legendary outlaw, which has gone so far as to name its rooms after characters from the tales, though the luxury accommodation is happily far removed from life in the forest.
