Woodall may not be a place you know, but many will recognize the name from driving on the M1 and either stopping at or rushing past Woodall services. The proximity of the motorway is a given then, making access to the hamlet – its population just 1,909 in the 2001 survey – very easy by car. Once a tiny farming hamlet, then expanding with coal pits providing more employment in the 19th century, this is now a residential area. It has few amenities, relying on the pubs, school and shops in Harthill a mile or so east of Woodall, though it is well placed to use the centres of both Rotherham and Sheffield, the latter in particular over the last ten or fifteen years having turned from ugly post-industrial duckling into a modern swan. The giant Meadowhall complex is a short drive away, and the centre of Sheffield has a huge amount to offer, as does the vibrant cultural quarter there. Other points of interest within a short distance of Woodall include Renishaw Hall, home to the Sitwell family for four centuries, and site of what is said to be the second most northerly vineyard in the world. Renishaw has wonderful Italianate gardens, and it provided an elegant setting for scenes in the 1995 BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. Renishaw is still a family home, so contact must be made in advance to organise visits. For a more vigorous resident or visitor the golfing opportunities nearby may be of interest: Rother Valley Golf Centre is four miles or so to the north west, Bondhay Golf and Fishing Club about the same distance south east, and slightly further afield to the east is Lindrick Golf club.
