Daughter of a country rector who served as her tutor. Spent first 25 years of life in Steventon. Began to write at an early to amuse her family. Main subject was the morals and mores of country life. Best known works are Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Emma (1816) and Persuasion (published posthumously 1817).
