Painted The Village Politicians (1806) and its success led him to settle in London. Painted family group of Sir Walter Scott now in Scottish National Gallery. Earlier paintings such as The Penny Wedding (1818) were in the Dutch style. Also painted portraits and had success as an etcher. Appointed King’s Limner in Scotland in 1823.
