A British philosopher, logician, mathematician and advocate for social reform. A prolific writer, A History of Western Philosophy (1945) was a best seller. He was a prominent war activist, strongly supporting nuclear disarmament, and an outspoken critic of the American invasion of Vietnam. In 1950 he was made a Nobel Laureate in Literature.
