Son of East End tailor. Studied at Central School of Speech and Drama, London. Early plays included The Caretaker (1958) and The Birthday Party (1959). Filmscripts include The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981) and The Handmaid’s Tale (1987). Awarded the CBE in 1992.
