Born 1773. Died 1829 - English physicist, physician and Egyptologist.
Studied medicine. Became physician in 1800 but devoted himself to scientific research. Known for his wave theory of light. Contributed to haemodynamics and Egyptology and deciphering the inscriptions on the Rosetta Stone. Elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1794.
