Born 1784. Died 1860 - Scottish statesman and Prime Minister.


Educated at Harrow and inherited a peerage at the age of seven. He was foreign secretary twice, under the Duke of Wellington (1828-30) and under Sir Robert Peel (1841-46). In 1852 he became Prime Minister of a coalition government, but mismanagement during the Crimean War forced his resignation in 1855.
