William Abney

Born 1843. Died 1920 - English chemist and educationist.
Educated at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich, he joined the Royal Engineers in 1861. He became instructor and then head of the School of Military Engineering, and by 1903 was the principal scientific advisor to the Board of Education. His greatest invention was a gelatine emulsion which made instantaneous photography possible. He was knighted in 1900.
