After serving in the Royal Marines (1959-71) and diplomatic service (1971-76) he became Liberal MP for Yeovil in 1983. He was Leader of the Liberal Democrats from 1988-99, and upon retirement in 2001 was elevated to the peerage. Publications include Making Change Our Ally (1994) and autobiographical volumes, The Ashdown Diaries Volume One 1988-1997 (2000) and The Ashdown Diaries Volume Two 1997-1999 (2001).
