He was educated at Oxford and became one of the leading figures in the ‘Oxford Philosophy Movement’. He pioneered the analysis of speech acts, and his best-known works are Philosophical Papers (1961), Sense and Sensibilia (1962) and How To Do Things with Words (1962).
