1926 - 1988 . English actor and comedian

He made his London debut in Peter Pan in 1952. He later starred in comedies and revues such as Share My Lettuce (1957), Pieces of Eight (1959) and One Over the Eight (1961). The radio series Round the Horne and Stop Messing About made him instantly recognisable as he perfected his style of speech and rich punctilious enunciation. He made several films, appearing regularly in the Carry On series, and his published diaries were a great success.
