Born 1877. Died 1944 - English physicist and Nobel Prize winner.
After studying at Liverpool and Cambridge Universities he began studying X-rays, which he researched for the next forty years, also taking the first steps towards the concept of the atomic number. By 1911 he was recognised as a leader in his field, and in 1917 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics.
