Born 1871. Died 1936 - English naval commander.


He joined the Navy in 1884 and served in the Sudan (1896-98). As naval commander he took part in the China War (1900), and in 1915 pursued and sank the German battle cruiser Blucher. He served in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and succeeded Lord Jellicoe as Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Fleet in the same year. He became First Sea Lord in 1919.
