She entered parliament as Labour MP of Lincoln (1974-79). In 1979 she joined Granada Television as chief researcher until 1983, when elected as MP for Derby South. She rose to deputy leader by 1992, and acting leader after the sudden death of John Smith until Tony Blair took over. She entered the Cabinet after Labour’s landslide victory in 1997.
