Born 1936 - English composer.
Educated at the Royal Academy of Music in London (1953-56), he also studied in Paris, and is well known for his music for film such as Billy Liar (1963) and Murder on the Orient Express (1973). He has composed operas, orchestral works and chamber music, and works include The Mines of Sulphur (1965), A Penny for a Song (1968), Victory (1970) and A Book of Hours (1991). He was knighted in 1998.
