Born 1879 - Rangpur, Bengal. Died 1963 - British economist, administrator and social reformer.


After studying at Oxford, he became leader writer on the Morning Post and compiled his noted report Unemployment (1909) regarding unemployment insurance. He served on several committees and wrote Report on Social Insurance and Allied Services (1942), also known as the Beveridge Report which was the basis for the creation of the welfare state. He wrote the autobiographical Power and Influence (1953) and books on unemployment and social security.
