Born 1881. Died 1951 - English Labour politician.
Orphaned at the age of seven and self-educated, he became a paid official of the dockers union and in 1920 earned the reputation of ‘Dockers KC’ after his success at the wage tribunal. He built up the National Transport and General Workers’ Union becoming its general secretary (1921-40), leading the General Strike (1926). He joined Churchill’s coalition government in 1940, and became Foreign Secretary for Labour government (1945-51). He wrote The Job to be Done (1942).
