Born 1545. Died 1613 - English scholar and diplomat.


Protestant family forced to take refuge during reign of Mary I. Studied Greek, Hebrew and modern languages. Ambassador to Denmark, France and Holland during reign of Elizabeth I. Retired from court in 1587 and spent huge sums on university library. Renamed Bodleian and was opened in 1602. Knighted by James I in 1604.
