Became editor of Edinburgh Encyclopaedia in 1808. Interested in the study of optics. Invented the kaleidoscope. Awarded the Rumford gold and silver medals in 1818 for discoveries on the polarisation of light. One of originators of British Association for the Advancement of Science (1831). Knighted in 1832.
