Born 1741. Died 1788 - Scottish cabinetmaker and burglar.


Known as Deacon Brodie. Son of wealthy carpenter and cabinetmaker, followed his father’s business. Financial pressure led him to burgling homes of his acquaintances. Unsuccessful attempt to break into Excise Office of Scotland, fled to Holland in 1788. Brought back to Edinburgh and hanged on gallows he had designed.
