Had tuberculosis and was unable to work when left school. Published The Storm (1954) followed by Loaves and Fishes (1959). Work encompasses myths, Scandinavian sagas, folklore of the Orkneys, sea yarns and his religious beliefs. Short stories included A Time to Keep (1969) and novels Magnus (1973) and Beside the Ocean of Time (1994).
