Began career as columnist for Punch magazine in 1978. Moved to New York, became editor in chief of Vanity Fair. Editor of New Yorker from 1992-98. Founded Talk magazine in 1998. Books include Under the Bamboo Tree (1973) and Life as A Party (1983). Awarded CBE in 2000.
