Born 1907. Died 1980 - English geophysicist.
Educated at Clare College, Cambridge. Worked on seismic experiments, measured heat flow through Earth’s crust, dynamo theory of Earth’s magnetic field and brought theory of continental drift back into favour. Elected FRS in 1941. Knighted in 1953.
