Educated at St John’s College, Cambridge. Greatly influenced by Darwin’s doctrine, opposed to natural selection. Wrote Erewhon (1872) and Erewhon Revisited (1901). Studied painting and loved music. Published translations and wrote literary criticism. Autobiographical novel published posthumously.
