Educated at Oxford. Became MP for South Dorset in 1929. Resigned over appeasement of Mussolini. In 1941 called to the Lords. Leader of House of Lords (1951-57). Represented Britain at founding conference of UNO. Advised Elizabeth II on choice of Harold Macmillan as Prime Minster. Resigned at decision to release Archbishop Makarios from his exile.
