Discovered as a teenager by Alistair Sim. Became well known on radio with A Life of Bliss. Films include The Belles of St Trinian’s (1954), three St Trinian sequels and Too Many Crooks (1959). Television roles include Arthur Daley in Minder (1979-94) and Henry Root in Root into Europe (1992). Awarded OBE in 1992.
