Began playing for Middlesex in 1936. Made first appearance for England in 1937. Played 78 test matches scoring 17 test centuries. In 1947 he scored 3,816 runs including a record 18 centuries. Also a member of Arsenal Football Team, winning a cap for England in 1943. Retired from professional cricket in 1957 taking up journalism and broadcasting.
