Born 1774. Died 1827 - Scottish publisher.
Started as bookseller before drifting into publishing. Chosen as publisher of Edinburgh Review (1802). Published for many leading writers of the time including Walter Scott. Purchased the copyright of Encyclopaedia Britannica in 1812. Bankrupt in 1826, launched Constable’s Miscellany in 1827 but died before he could benefit from its success.
