Studied at Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Stage debut in The Roving Boy (1959) but didn’t achieve recognition until The Black and White Minstrels (1972) and Savages (1973). Films include Galileo (1973), Heavenly Pursuits (1986) and Shirley Valentine (1989). Later stage performances include the world premiere of The Ride Down Mount Morgan (1991).
