Studied mathematics and natural sciences at Cambridge. Became Oxford’s first Professor of Theoretical Chemistry in 1972. His research was mainly within theoretical chemistry. Awarded the Davy Medal of the Royal Society (1970) and Faraday Medal of the Chemical Society (1968). Chairman of Oxfam from 1965 to 1971.
