Miner’s son, at 14 started worked in pits. By 1938 was full-time union organiser. Played controversial part in the London transport strike in 1958. Backed nuclear disarmament policy. Elected MP for Nuneaton in 1965. Gave up seat in 1966 and resumed former union post.
