Born 1789. Died 1874 - Scottish engineer.

Apprenticed to an engine-wright in 1804. Established engineering works in Manchester in 1817 making machinery for water wheels and cotton mills, and building locomotives. Built hundreds of iron boats at his works in Millwall, London (1835-49). Advised government on the use of iron for defensive purposes. Elected FRS in 1850, made a baronet in 1869.
