Born Alfred Hawthorn Hill. Appeared at working-men's clubs before moving to nightclub and theatre work. Worked as a radio performer until his first appearance on television in 1949 in the programme Hi There. Became well known in 1955 with The Benny Hill Show on BBC Television. Appeared in a number of films including Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965) and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Had a hit song with Ernie (The Fastest Milkman In The West).
