Studied law at Oxford, called to the Bar in 1952. Became a freelance broadcaster. Presented Panorama (1967-1972), Question Time (1979-89) and The Parliament Programme (1992). Received the Richard Dimbleby award for factual television in 1974. Written a number of books including Day by Day (1975). Knighted in 1981.
