An English poet, using his working class childhood as a theme for much of his work. Probably bestknown for his long poem V (1985) broadcast on television in 1987, he is also recognised for his adaptations of the York Mystery Plays. Publications include Earthworks (1964), The Gaze of the Gorgon (1992, Whitbread Poetry Award), and Laureate’s Block and Other Poems (2000).
