Born 1939 - Northern Irish poet, critic and Nobel Prize Winner.


A Northern Irish poet, he made his debut with Eleven Poems (1965). Significant works include Death of a Naturalist (1966), Wintering Out (1972, influenced by sectarian violence in Northern Ireland), North (1975) and Field Work (1979). He won the Noble Prize for Literature in 1995, and won the Whitbread prize in 1997 for The Spirit Level, and again in 1999 for his translation of Beowulf.
