Born 1829. Died 1902 - English historian.

Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Wrote History of England from the Accession James I to the Restoration. First instalment appeared in 1863. At his death he had completed the work as far as 1656. Published a number of other historical works including The Thirty Years’ War (1874).
