Born 1727. Died 1807 - Scottish songwriter and violinist.
Trained as a plaid weaver but gave up the trade to become a full-time musician. The Duke of Atholl became his patron which ensured his employment for balls and dance parties put on by the local nobility. Became renowned as a fiddler, possibly the most famous Scottish fiddler of the 18th century. His sons Andrew, John and Nathaniel were all practising musicians.
