Born 1738 in Hanover, Germany. Died 1822 - British astronomer.

Son of a musician. Moved to England in1755, settling in Bath in 1766 where his interest in astronomy began. Built his own telescopes. In 1781 discovered Uranus and later two satellites of Uranus and Saturn. Drew up first catalogue of double stars, observed Sun’s motion through space, produced model of Milky Way. Knighted in 1816.
