Born 1898. Died 1972 - Scottish documentary film producer.

Known as the father of British documentary. Studied at the University of Glasgow. Joined the Empire Marketing Board in 1928, established his reputation with Drifters (1929), a film about herring fishermen. Set up the National Film Board of Canada. Was film controller at the Central Office of British documentary from 1948 to 1950. Presented an anthology of international documentary films on television (1957-65).
