Studied at Oxford. Called to the Bar in 1637. Was a Justice of the Common Pleas (1654-58). After the Restoration he was made Chief Baron of the Exchequer and Chief Justice of the King’s Bench. His writings include a History of the Common Law (1713) and a History of the Pleas of the Crown (1736).
