Born 1661. Died 1715 - Statesman and poet.
Studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. Co-wrote The Story of the Country Mouse and the City Mouse (1687) with Matthew Prior. Became an MP in 1691. Originated the Bank of England in 1694, appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. Became Prime Minster in 1697 but retired to the Exchequer in 1699. Made Viscount Sunbury and Earl of Halifax on the accession of George I.
